Barcelona are a fearsome machine - Roma coach Rudi Garcia
Rudi Garcia's Roma finished second in Serie A last season .
Roma coach Rudi Garcia says that it will take a miracle to beat Barcelona in the Champions League next Wednesday.
The Giallorossi made an emphatic return to European football's top club competition last season when they beat CSKA Moscow 5-1 at the Stadio Olimpico.
After drawing 1-1 at Manchester City, they were brought back down to earth with a 7-1 humbling at home to Bayern Munich.
Defeat at home to City on the final matchday saw them drop into the Europa League, which they will be looking to avoid when they get their Champions League campaign under way at home to the holders next Wednesday.
"Barcelona are a fearsome machine," the French coach said in an interview with RMC radio. "Everybody is convinced that they will get 18 points, so that implies getting six off us, but sometimes miracles happen in football. We've got nothing to lose and we've got to do all we can to upset the odds.
"We've got to leave all thoughts of our recent friendly [a 3-0 defeat in August] in the dressing room because we suffered from their game back then, but our aim is to reach the next round."
Francesco Totti, who has yet to feature this season and turns 39 at the end of the month, is being primed for that occasion.
"Totti is a star; an incredible player," Garcia said, dismissing the rumours that he no longer has a place in his side for the club captain. "You don't know who is more important in Rome: Pope Totti or Pope Francis."
The 38-year-old has only been left out of the games against Hellas Verona and Juventus because he was not in peak condition, but Garcia said he is set to make his first appearance of the season against Frosinone this weekend, and then in Wednesday night's big match.
"The captain's in good shape," Garcia said. "It's incredible when you think that he'll be turning 39 in just a few days.
"He's not asked for any special treatment, we are just managing him. He's extraordinary and he's going to help us on and off the field.
"When I arrived here, I told him that my objective was to win titles with him and I am still convinced of this -- 200 percent. I have no idea when he wants to retire, but for as long as he continues to enjoy himself and train the way he is now, he's always going to be an important player."
Garcia said the arrival of Edin Dzeko from City does not mean Totti's days are drawing to an end, explaining he can see them both leading his side's attack this season.
"They can play together in a 4-3-3 against a five-man defence, with one of them pushed out wide without any defensive duties," Garcia said. "In Italy, about 40 percent of sides defend that way, but in the Champions League there are only two or three percent.
"Otherwise we need to adapt our style to a 4-3-1-2 or a 4-2-3-1 with Totti as the playmaker. Even a 4-4-2 would work. We're working on it more and more."
Garcia also praised recent recruit Lucas Digne for his impressive debut performance in the 2-1 win against Juventus before the international break that followed his arrival on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain.
"He has been very keen to impress. He is full of motivation and happy to be here. I wasn't planning to start him straight away against Juve but I had a problem with [Vasilis] Torosidis, who couldn't play. So I threw him in," Garcia said.
France left-back Digne, 22, initially broke through at Lille under Garcia before being sold to Paris in a big-money deal in the summer of 2013, and the Roma boss added: "He is lucky that he knows how the team plays because it is basically the same as how we played at Lille. He took to it like a fish to water and put in a great performance.
"There are boys in the squad whose objective is to get to the Euros with their national teams. That is the case for Lucas. He made the choice to come because he knew he would play here."
Digne went to last year's World Cup with France and has won eight caps, although the last of those came against Sweden back in November.
