Portugal's 10th consecutive defeat to France -- a run of unpleasantness that now dates back to the mid 1970s -- was not the ideal preparation for what has now become a crucial Euro 2016 qualifier against Albania in Elbasan on Monday.

With that match in mind, it was expected that new coach Fernando Santos might experiment in the 1-0 friendly defeat against the French on Friday, with some of Portugal's old guard beginning to fade and an exciting new generation emerging to stake its claim for a place in the upcoming Euro finals and World Cup qualifiers that will follow on next Autumn.

However, Fernando Santos, who has a long history of conservatism as a coach, continued to do a passable impersonation of ex-national team manager Paulo Bento, broadly opting for safety, familiar faces and stolid tactics that foundered upon the rocks of a well-built but unspectacular French team, whose late goal from substitute Mathieu Valbuena was just reward for their almost total second half domination.
