The Portuguese was given time off to tend to his ill father during his time at Manchester United – and has never forgotten the gesture
Cristiano Ronaldo says Sir Alex Ferguson was like a father figure to him during his time at Manchester United.
The Portuguese forward was one of Ferguson's best signings, shining at Old Trafford after arriving from childhood club Sporting Lisbon in 2003.
He enjoyed a fine relationship with the Scot until his exit in 2009 and says that Ferguson's compassion took him aback.
Speaking in an upcoming BBC documentary on Ferguson, Ronaldo revealed: "He invites everyone to come for lunch, come for tea... an English cup of tea!
"It was a family with him.
All smiles: Ronaldo and Ferguson had a fine relationship at United
"When my dad was sick in London and was in hospital – very bad, in a coma – I had a conversation with [Ferguson].
"I said, 'Boss, I don't feel good.'
"We are in a key moment in the league and the Champions League , but I say, 'Boss, I don't feel good. I want to see my dad.'
Father figure: Ferguson took Ronaldo under his wing
"[He said] 'Cristiano, you want to go one day, two days, one week, you can go. I'm going to miss you here because you know you are important. But your dad [comes] first.
"When he told me that, I thought, 'This guy's unbelievable'.
"He was a football father for me."
