Liverpool fans are doing cartwheels - but Jurgen Klopp is no miracle worker and hasn't reinvented the wheel

The German still represents something of a risk at Anfield and cannot yet be compared to legends of the game like Jose Mourinho or Arsene Wenger, writes John Cross

Kloppite: The German will soon be the toast of Anfield
Jurgen Klopp will be unveiled at Anfield this week to almost universal praise.

Everyone with connections to Liverpool, Germany or Borussia Dortmund have been queuing up to tell us that Klopp will be a huge success.

Dietmar Hamann says Liverpool fans will take to his “passion”, Robbie Fowler has become a huge admirer and ex-Dortmund star Paul Lambert says Klopp is made for Liverpool.

Without wishing to dampen the mood, it must be worth offering some words of caution. It must still represent as something of a risk for Liverpool.

Klopping it: Things didn't go well for the German in his final year with Dortmund
In managerial terms, he hasn’t got the experience of a Carlo Ancelotti. As good as his success was at Dortmund, he lost his way in the final season.

Maybe Klopp took his eye off the ball and that would be a worry. His touchline histrionics will be entertaining but he’s clearly an excitable character and it may work - but there’s a chance it might not. He won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

My feeling is that the Liverpool fans will love him. He will buy into the Anfield atmosphere, revel in the hero worship and embrace it as a tool in his armoury. He did that at Dortmund and it gave him extra energy - and the fans always stayed with him.

Fan favourite: Klopp will be a welcome appointment at Anfield
But there is a big difference of course at Liverpool in that if you look at the players he had at Dortmund, they are very different to the squad he will inherit at Anfield.

Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gundogan and Robert Lewandowski were all there in his best seasons at Dortmund.

He enjoyed two Bundesliga titles and led them to a Champions League final where they lost to Bayern Munich.

Yes, he upset the odds and challenged Bayern. But if you’ve ever been to Dortmund, you will know it’s not a small club. They should be challenging and won trophies before Klopp and will do so again.

He’s hardly a miracle worker. Don’t forget even in the early days when Roman Abramovich was one of the few billionaire foreign owners, Chelsea didn’t have it their own way.

Even with finance, reputation and dominance, you can’t win the title every year. Manchester United ended Chelsea’s run of back-to-back titles. Dortmund briefly interrupted Bayern’s dominance.

Hummels, Gundogan and Lewandowski were world class players. Mamadou Sakho, Joe Allen and Danny Ings aren’t.

Dortmund suffered a similar fate as Liverpool as Lewandowski and Mario Gotze both left for Bayern Munich. They struggled to maintain their success after those departures.

Klopp will entertain us. He will be great at press conferences, sound bites and the hipsters will love his beard.

Talking the talk: Klopp will be entertaining whether Liverpool win or lose
Klopp’s style is regarded as gegenpressing which is winning the ball high up the field in order to create a chance for a shot as quickly as possible.

Liverpool fans are doing cartwheels about this apparently as if it’s the tactical version of inventing the wheel. Let’s just break this down for a moment. Pressing is actually not new. It’s working hard, closing down and doing it in dangerous areas. It’s actually what Brendan Rodgers did.

Next up we’ll be told Klopp has also invented tackling and shooting. Talk about emperor’s new clothes.

Klopp could be a success. But one of the very pundits who has urged caution has been Danny Murphy and he suggested that it was something of a gamble and a risk.

Klopp of the pops: Many have championed the German's imminent appointment
I’d like to see it work. And there’s a good chance it will be. But Klopp hasn’t reinvented the wheel. He is bright, entertaining and enthusiastic.

I know some clubs have been put off because he is too excitable, too temperamental and that was a worry. He has had a great run but you can’t compare him to legends of the game like Jose Mourinho or Arsene Wenger because they’ve had sustained and long term success.

Klopp is also not a miracle worker. He can only do so much with the tools at his disposal.

I’d love to see him work even if heavy metal is not my cup of tea. That’s what he calls his style. He’s loud, brash and irresistible.

Let’s hope it works - even if it promises to be entertaining either way.
