Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland: Martin O'Neill's side forced to settle for Euro 2016 play-off spot as Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski scores 15th goal in 447 minutes of
football

Republic of Ireland made to wait for Euro 2016 qualification shot following 2-1 defeat against Poland

One of Robert Lewandowski’s team-mates wore a foreboding

smile on the eve of the game as he declared that the Bayern Munich hitman – with 14 goals in his previous five outings – would live up to his billing as the world’s deadliest marksman.

He is the planet’s most potent striker and is the reason

Republic of Ireland will again have to take a detour via the play-offs if they are to make it to France next summer.

And so it was that his winner killed Ireland’s hopes of

qualifying automatically for a major tournament for the first time since USA 94.
