Xherdan Shaqiri has emerged as a shock transfer target for Stoke.

Potters assistant boss Mark Bowen has revealed that Mark Hughes is keen to bringthe Swiss international to the Britannia, despite the attentions of some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Stoke pulled off a surprise transfer in the summer by landing Bojan Krkic from Barcelona, and Bowen is hopeful the Spaniard can convince Shaqiri that the Staffordshire outfit are in the market for star players.

"To get a good player like him on board would be fantastic," he told BBC Radio Stokeon Tuesday.

"There are other clubs interested, but it doesn’t mean we rule ourselves out. He’s definitely on the list, but there is competition for a player of his ability."

On Bojan, he continued: "It’s bound to help and it does help.

"There’s many boxes to tick, not least the financial side of it, and with Shaqiri coming from one of the best clubs in the world, there’s a lot of persuasion to get it done."

Inter Milan, Juventus and Liverpool are among the clubs to have been linked to Shaqiri, who has found first-team football difficult to come by with Bayern Munich this season.

He has appeared just nine times in the Bundesliga this campaign, netting once.

Despite only being 23 years of age, Shaqiri has already represented Switzerland on 51 occasions, scoring 19 times.
