UFC star Anderson Silva has been banned for 12 months after testing positive for steroids earlier this year.

Anderson Silva has been hit with a 12-month doping ban after the former UFC champion tested positive for steroid use in January.

It was revealed in February that Silva had failed a doping test prior to his last fight against Nick Diaz in Las Vegas on January 31.

As a result, the Brazilian's win over Diaz was expunged, and the Nevada Athletic Commission has now ruled that he must serve a retroactive year-long suspension from the date of his most recent bout.


As such, the legendary ex-middleweight champion is ineligible to fight until February next year, while he has also been fined around $360,000, according to widespread reports.

A UFC statement read: "At the conclusion of his suspension, Silva must present a clean test upon reapplication of a license before his next fight in Nevada.

"The UFC organisation maintains a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents by its athletes, and fully supports the Commission's ongoing efforts to ensure clean competition by all MMA athletes.

"UFC recognises Silva's great career and looks forward to his return to the Octagon in 2016."
