Steven Gerrard has spoken to Jurgen Klopp to discuss the possibility about the former captain returning to Liverpool to train during the MLS off-season.

And following talks with the new Reds manager, Gerrard will also meet the German in person on Sunday when Liverpool host Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Gerrard saw his LA Galaxy side knocked out of the MLS play-offs by Seattle Sounders last week, and is set to return to England on Wednesday.

It is fitting that the former skipper is returning for the game against Palace, as Alan Pardew's side were the visitors the final time he played at Anfield for Liverpool in the Premier League in May. But he will hope for a better result than the 3-1 defeat they suffered on that day.

Gerrard has always made clear his desire to return to Liverpool in some capacity. When he originally announced his departure in January, he said: 'It is my sincere hope and wish that one day I can return to serve Liverpool again, in whatever capacity best helps the club.'

Whether Gerrard could return to play on loan from LA Galaxy, however, remains to be seen.

He is currently due back at the MLS club on January 15 for pre-season training, but he would not be the first to delay his return date in order to make a short-term switch elsewhere.

David Beckham twice made moves from the club to play for AC Milan during his five-year career there, and also had a couple of spells training with Arsenal during the off-season in the US. While Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan have also made similar switches to the Premier League in the past.
